Scrapbooking On A Budget
More and more people are getting hooked on scrapbooking these days. The wide selection of scrapbooking tools and materials available at arts and crafts stores will attest to that. Some of these items even come with surprisingly steep prices. So, are you thinking of embracing the hobby as well, but concerned of the fortune you might need to spend?
It's true that some scrapbookers shell out huge sums of money for the craft. However, there's a different approach to it: the economical way! You can come up with charming and one-of-a-kind creations even without exceeding a certain budget. The following are some tips on how you can do just that.
Some off-the-rack albums can come quite pricey. But you can always create one with materials lying around your home. For the album cover, you can form one from cardboard sheets. But if you have an unused binder, your task comes much easier. Simply remove all the contents and start decorating right away. You can cover it with used gift wrappers or wallpapers, or make a collage out of colorful magazine pictures.
For the scrapbook pages, old folders or cardboard sheets may be used, and cover them with used gift wrappers. You may also do so using colorful magazine pages. Or why not make your own recycled paper? Immerse in water overnight strips of newspapers. Then turn them into pulp them using a blender. Transfer them onto a mesh, making thin sheets, and let dry under the sun.
There are many items that can be found at home that will make for unique embellishments. You may use fabrics with striking patterns or buttons from unused apparel stashed away in your closet. You husband's workstation in the garage may reveal little treasures like nuts, washers and the likes. When you let your imagination run wild, there are a lot of things around you can use as decorations.
There are items that will make the pages you create truly memorable. You can use the ticket stub when you attended your son's school performance where he played his takamine acoustic guitar. You may paste an invitation, party hat and even confetti coils used for your daughter's birthday party. The sand at the beach where you and your family spent last weekend could also grace your scrapbook!
For the cutting tools, you may simply borrow some from a fellow scrapbooker that you know of. The fact is you need not purchase a lot of tools for the craft. Even with just a cutter and a craft knife, you can make interesting patterns and shapes. Creating scrapbooks need not be expensive, as long as you use your inventiveness.
The TSA Posts Its 'Top Good Catches Of 2011' List, Not One Of Which Is An Actual Terrorist (Techdirt)
Everyone loves a good "Best of..." list and with 2011 having just wrapped up,
pretty much every site on the web has a few posted. Bruce Schneier points us
in the direction of The TSA Blog, which has posted its own self-congratulatory
list, "The Top 10 Good Catches of 2011."
"Good" is very much a sliding scale when you're a government agency that
combines the incompetent brusqueness of classic security theater with the
thoroughness of an overenthusiastic gynecological exam.
So, what sort of "epic gets" made the TSA's list? Well, there's a variety of
weapons, ranging from normal loaded handguns in carry-on bags to something
called a "Tactical Spike" to throwing knives to a taser disguised as a
cellphone. There's also a science project, some wildlife, inert landmines,
some chunks of C4 explosive and a flare gun. There's a lot of items that sound
dangerous, but Bruce Schneier points out what's missing from the TSA's
collection:
> _ That's right; not a single terrorist on the list. Mostly forgetful, and
entirely innocent, people. Note that they fail to point out that the firearms
and knives would have been just as easily caught by pre-9/11 screening
procedures. And ...
