Can You Be the "Biggest Loser" in Madison?
I think one of the biggest lessons I learned from watching a program like The Biggest Loser (on NBC), is that the journey to weight loss and staying fit is easier if you have help and support along the way. You dont have to do it alone.
Thats why I chose to join a gym here in Madison. It was downright easy. I did some shopping around until I found a center that was open 24 hours (I needed that flexibility with my crazy schedule). I found one that offered a FREE 7-day pass, so I could get the feel of their center. I found one with a personal trainer available, in case I decided to hire one. And, I was able to find one close to my humble abode so that I could spend more time on the workout than I did running back and forth to the gym.
Im one of those people that get into the exercise scene much more easily if I see others working hard at it. That always pushes me on and helps me work up a bigger sweat. I made sure I met some people who appeared to have the same goals as me and I talked to them about the routine that works best for them. I dont blame the people who come with their MPG players or are glued to one of the TV sets (they apparently need that down time), but thats not for me. I like the idea that we can exchange tips and laughs. When I feel the support of others at the gym, it just makes me want to get back sooner and work harder.
I start out on the treadmill. An easy way for me to stretch out a bit and get my heart rate going. Then I move on to nine of the fitness machines both for weight loss and toning. I feel much better after a workout and I need to keep reminding myself that I will feel a whole lot better when I get the extra weight off.
Now, if I can only stay away from many of the junk foods out there, this process is going to go much more quickly for me. The thing I have to keep reminding myself about is how many workouts it takes to drop those empty calories I keep putting in my body. I just need to avoid foods that put me two steps back (like the super-sized fries and soda). You have to reward yourself once in a while, but its important to eat healthier overall. And I'm not talking about all salads. I mean choosing leaner cuts of meat or a baked potato (light on the toppings) rather than those fries. Just think before you stuff those high calorie and fat foods into your mouth and youll be fine.
One more thing, I have a friend that goes to school over at UW-Madison. He says they have an excellent fitness center on campus. So, just a side note. I you go to the university, that is yet another option available to you; a less expensive one at that.
For me, I soon hope to be known in Madison as the Biggest of the biggest losers!
How to set a Goal, and How to Reach it (INC)
This time of year, goal-setting becomes a bit of a cliche. That's because
we're doing it wrong. How our goals can help us learn who we are, and what
we're capable of.
Gifts wrapped? Check. Waistband? A little too tight. Harmony at home? Well…
Business running like clockwork? No? Time for New Year's resolutions!
Why bother? Why reinforce the cliche -- make a resolution and then go ahead
and break it? I do it because I know setting goals is the secret to progress.
Resolutions aren't destinations. They're starting points. We may never reach
our destination or goal, and even if we do, we may discover it isn't where we
really want to be. Goals help us figure out what we think we want, but more
importantly, goals help us figure out who we are and what we're capable of
achieving.
There is no right or wrong way to do this, but here are four things I always
keep in mind when making my New Year's resolutions:
**Stretch, but not too far.** My yoga teacher always tells the new students,
"Take it easy. If you wake up sore tomorrow morning, you'll blame me and not
come ...
