Danube River Hit By Fish-killing Dangerous Red Sludge Spill
As feared when the catastrophe broke out, a huge overflow of toxic red sludge in Hungary started flowing into the Danube River on Thurs. The toxic spillage took three days to reach the Danube after vast sums of gallons of red sludge swept via the countryside in western Hungary when a containment reservoir at an aluminum plant gave way. Fears that the Danube River, Europe's second longest waterway, would be poisoned by toxic sludge were voiced soon after the reservoir had been breached at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar Zrt alumina plant 100 miles west of Budapest near the town of Ajka.
