and 1 and 2 on the gear thing, I thought automatic cars only had 1 forward gear ???
How much more expensive is it to run an automatic car ?? I dont really know coz here in Ireland, auto cars are not so common, I'm 17 and I passed my test just a few hours ago, woohoo !!! so I want to get a car .. and need some advice from people ...

When a car with an automatic transmission is in "Park" a brake is applied that prevents the car from rolling. It's the same thing as applying the emergency or "parking" brake on a manual transmission car.
Neutral is in between gears, just like any automobile. If there is no gear engaged the car is in "neutral".
Automatic transmissions have several gears, they just shift back and forth "automatically". The 1 and the 2 are low gears. They stay engaged until manually changed. So if you were pulling a boat out of the water, you'd want to stay in 1st (low) gear. You would not want the automatic transmission to engage and up shift, which would cause you to lose torque and towing power.
