BJJ- Crosstrain Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu With Another Academy When You Go Out-of-Town
For some Maryland jujitsu athletes, training Brazilian jiu-jitsu is more than doing martial arts it’s a lifestyle for most BJJ practitioners. They enjoy the BJJ school and everything in it: the training, students, and teachers. They have an extreme loyalty to their team and can’t see themselves training at another school. Unfortunately some BJJ practitioners have to travel because of their job so they might have to consider training at another school while they are gone. Unless they have portable mats and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu partner to train with they will have to consider training at another school. Students who truly love the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu will continue to train no matter what school it is.
There are some guidelines to follow before thinking about cross-training at another BJJ school. Begin the search for Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools once you know where you are traveling to. Get a list of schools in the area you'll been traveling to and show them to your instructor. MMA in MD instructors recommend asking your instructors for advice on which schools might be the best in that area. It is also better to ask your instructor first because you don’t know if your school is feuding with another team. Once you get approval from your instructor you can begin the process of contacting the BJJ school.
It’s better to contact the BJJ school that you are thinking about training at in advance instead of randomly showing up. You should call the school to get their schedule of classes you can attend. They will also be able to tell you if there is a mat fee or charge for training on their mats. You have to be careful when training at another school because you don’t know how their students spar. You have to be careful because some schools are territorial when it comes to upper belts from an outside school training with them. The best fighters who get MMA training in MD aren’t afraid to train at a different school because they love training Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
How can I train in BJJ as a career?
I hate my job it pays nickles.
College doesn't excite me.
I don't want to join the army.
I would be willing to sell everything I have (even move) to go train in BJJ/MMA as a career. Make it my life.
Is this possible?
P.S. I would even live at the gym and work at the gym just to train.
Serious responses only. (22 male 5 years Kempo, 2 years Boxing, 2 years Gung-fu, 6 month BJJ (TEAMROC)
TO CLEAR MY QUESTION UP - I HAVE ALREADY BEEN A MEMBER OF A GYM AND HAVE TRAINED IN MMA FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS (NO FIGHTS JUST WORK OUT SESSIONS) AS A "HOBBY" I CAN'T CONTINUE TO PAY FOR THE CLASSES ANYMORE. WOULD THERE BE ANY TRAINERS THAT WOULD TAKE ME IN UNDER THEIR WING AND IN RETURN I PAY WITH MY LIFE. IN COUNTRY AND OUT
oddly enough when I was 21 my chips were down, and I ended up living in my BJJ academy for 2 years, and while I was poor and could barely afford to eat I think it was the best experience of my life.
the only way you're going to be able to move in and train for free is if you can teach. Are you experienced enough in boxing to teach boxing at your BJJ academy, even if it's just for kids? I used to teach Boxing and BJJ in exchange for free training, room, and board, but I was already an experienced blue belt when I moved in, and had a significant boxing background. talk to your instructor about your situation, and see what his thoughts are. maybe he wants to market a kids boxing program.
