What Martial Arts Style Is Best For Women Beginners?
The decision to train in jiu-jitsu or muay thai for women depends mostly on what they are interested in and what their goals are. Self protection is one of the main motivations for women martial artists.. If, God forbid, something crazy were to happen, both jiujitsu and thai kickboxing will give women the self-defense techniques they need.. Self-confidence alone will prevent most attackers who are looking for an easy target.!
I am a twenty-two year old female and I joined my Columbia BJJ training school for this reason; I wanted to learn a martial arts which would provide me with more confidence and the necessary combat skills if I ever had to defend myself.
In a jiu-jitsu match, opponents start standing, but most of the match occurs on the ground. Muay Thai fights begin on the feet so the Thai kickboxer should always try to stay standing to throw effective punches and kicks.. If a women were to be attacked there are high chances that she would be brought to the ground and would need to defend herself from there. If a woman were to choose between jiu-jitsu and muay thai on the basis of learning to defend herself, jiu-jitsu would be the more logical choice. Women need to know how to perform groundfighting, which is what the bulk of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu match contains, despite the fact that the participants start standing..
Muay thai would also supportive of learning self defense, but for the most part you need to remain standing. You don't have a lot of options if you are taken down or simply dragged to the ground.. If you were taken down, you would need to find a way to get back to your feet to employ your striking techniques, but with jujitsu, you are still dangerous on the ground..
While at my Columbia BJJ training school, I have partaken in both jiu-jitsu and muay thai classes. In jiu-jitsu, I am able to practice moves from class and spar everyday, but in muay thai I must first train to be somewhat proficient and then start sparring. This is another reason women should train in jiu-jitsu because they will receive daily practice. There is no substitute for drilling and sparring in ingraining your techniques into your muscle memory..
Females will learn how to defend themselves with regular jiu jitsu training.. I began my martial arts training in the same place as most people reading this article - a novice woman trying to learn how to defend herself. Having gone through the experience, I would recommend women to begin with jiu jitsu first..
